Five years ago, after surviving the hardships of a 17-year abusive marriage, Jessica found the courage to reclaim her life - for herself and her eight children.
But as she took those first steps, she faced another devastating setback. As a final act of punishment, her ex-husband destroyed everything that belonged to Jessica and her children and that they had worked so hard for. The home was unlivable, with their belongings and household items shattered. Even through years of chaos and abuse, Jessica had always worked hard to create a home for her children. Now, they would have to start over. And they did.
Finding the Courage to Start Over
Jessica secured a divorce, a restraining order and housing for herself and her children. Referred to Furnish Hope through DHS, she was initially reluctant to let anyone through the door. She felt ashamed of the condition of their home and vulnerable about letting others see the devastation she and her children were trying to overcome.
But she opened the door - and on the other side was a hug. After encountering so many closed doors, Jessica remembers the relief of being welcomed without judgment.
More Than a Table
Of everything she received, one piece meant more to Jessica than any other: the dining table. She remembered having one as a child and knew the connection that could be created around it. Today, it’s where her own family gathers for meals, board games and family nights.
“To others, it’s just a table, but to me, it’s family.”

But Jessica’s story is about far more than furniture. As she began allowing people into her life, she discovered that accepting help could also mean discovering connection. To Jessica, “hope means connection, and it means giving myself the opportunity to trust and allow people into my life.”
Finding Her Voice:
A Powerful Story of Courage and Hope
At this year’s Kendall Catwalk for a Cause, Jessica took another courageous step - sharing her story with hundreds of community members who came together in support of Furnish Hope.
Standing before the crowd, she spoke openly about her journey, the importance of accepting help and the power of human connection.
Her message was a moving reminder that Furnish Hope provides more than furniture. It offers compassion, dignity and the reassurance that no one has to face life’s hardest moments alone.
A Future She Can Dream About
Five years later, Jessica and her children are thriving. They have a beautiful home and Jessica is building a future that once felt impossible to imagine. She is going back to school and works in behavioral health, serving her community with a deeply personal goal: to be the person for someone else that she needed all those years ago. And she is allowing herself to dream.
“Furnish Hope didn’t rebuild my life for me. I had to do that myself. But they showed up at a moment when I desperately needed to be reminded that I didn’t have to do it alone. When I took that breath and let people in, that connection brought hope with it.”
Jessica dreams of opening her own business, owning her own home and taking her children on a real family vacation. They may sound like ordinary dreams, but for Jessica, they represent something extraordinary - the freedom to imagine and choose what comes next. And the courage to believe that something different is possible.
