When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn

Every individual we help is rebuilding in some way. Some are overcoming long-term challenges, while others are navigating unexpected events that suddenly upend life as they know it. A natural disaster, a health crisis, the loss of housing or the discovery of something that makes a home unsafe can change everything in an instant. No matter what brings someone to Furnish Hope, they all share a common need: dignity, care and the opportunity to begin again.

A Home Upended

Jenny and her family had been living in their duplex for only a short time when a plumbing issue led to the discovery of black mold in several rooms. Their home quickly became unlivable, and after her youngest child became ill from exposure, they had no choice but to leave. A friend opened their home to the family, and for a period of time, the family of four shared a single spare bedroom while they searched for a path forward.

You don’t know that stuff can make a place feel like a home until you don’t have it. When it’s gone, it really is just an empty space.
— Jenny | FH Recipient

Eventually, Jenny's family was connected to support through Family Access Network and COPA, and those connections led them to Furnish Hope. Receiving furnishings provided more than essential household items. It offered dignity, stability and one less obstacle as they worked to rebuild their lives.

Furnish Hope helped them start their journey. As Jenny shares, “Furnish Hope is the first leg of the race and it’s up to us to be the last.”
